Captain's Blog .... A Busy Couple of Weeks Jim .... part One !!!
The last edition of the Blog (at least I know I have one reader - hope I'm not just doing this for you Craig !!) said I was about to embark on probably the busiest couple of weeks of the Captain's Year. As so it has proven to be .... !!
Saturday 27th June saw me maintain 100% attendance record in the A Team as we travelled to Boston GC for our sixth SLGL match. Needing to get a good result to maintain top spot in the league we surpassed expectations and ran out winners 5-1 - three away games now undefeated. Paul Knapp and I managed to return a 7 under gross betterball with Knappy eagling the 17th to secure the win 2&1. Pressure now on to win our two remaining home games but no-one is getting complacent about that as there is a great team spirit and desire to finish the job off this year. Great phone call to hear that the B team lads had won 5-1 as well at home to Greetham !!
Following day, up at 7.00am for the annual 36 hole Shelley Cup, Club Championship day. I struggled for form today, putting together a gross 78 in the morning and an 80 in the afternoon. I thoroughly enjoyed Gary Sharp & Chris Jones’ company all day and the banter was great thoughout. Well played Steve Greenfield in winning the Championship with Roger Rawson coming second and Craig Hallam third. In the nett comp holder Will Harris, who only got in at the last minute, did a net 62 pm to take home the prize with Dan Leahy & Dan Broadhead in 2nd and 3rd spots. Well done everyone..... a great day's golf.
I had a day off on the Monday, getting ready for Captain's Weekend and the Four Round Challenge the following day, 30th June. The idea was to play 4 rounds during the day - one each with the Vice Captain, Seniors Captain, Lady Captain and the Junior Captain raising sponsorship money for GOSH.
Arising from me slumbers at 4.30am I arrived at the golf course at 5.30 to find Vice Captain John Booth on the practice putting green in the fog ......... how keen is that ? It did him some good as he gave me a good going over and beat me fair & square by 4&3 in 2 hours 20 minutes ! Well played John ... obviously in form (see later ...Ed !)
Seniors Captain
Keith Dugmore joined us for breakfast and we got away for just before 9.00. Now being Seniors Captain, I had to explain to Keith what white tees were and once we had got over that we had a good run round in 2 hours 40 minutes !! I can see why Keith doesn't lose many games in the Seniors season as he knocked it round very steadily.
Lady Captain Dorne Werner joined us at lunch and she could not resist the Challenge of also playing off the white blocks, something she had not done before. To her great credit, she

played really well, only needing oxygen on 13 tees she was that far back !! After a few lost balls, seeing trees on the course she’d never seen we finished our round in 2 hours 50 minutes at about 3 o'clock. This presented me with a little dilemma as
Junior Capitano Dan Leahy didn't finish school till after 4 and me little legs and feet were aching.
To the rescue came Mandy with a bucket of iced water to put the feet in ..... and yes that is Guinness..... the second one if I remember rightly !

Dan, eating a hastily prepared sandwich, and I got off at 4.45pm accompanied by the Great White Legged Steward, Richard. Cate also joined me and pushed the trolley as the arms were aching a bit

too ...!
We were back in the clubhouse at 7.30pm to be met by Andy Watson, DC and Dave Greenfield who kindly turned up for a bit of much welcome moral support.... and more Guinness !!! I didn't do too bad scoring wise .... an 83, 75, 77 and another 77 to finish. I make that .3 back Dave !!
It was a great day, very warm and the best bit was all the members sponsors and business sponsors raised a brilliant £1580 for GOSH !!
Thanks everyone.. superb effort !!
See part two for the Summer Ball and Captain's Weekend !!
