MIXED MAYHEM SATURDAY OCTOBER 1st 2016
Twelve mixed pairs drawn into six fourballs competed in this year's Mixed Mayhem competition. The format was an unusal one in that each pair drew a scorecard of another course from the Pro Shop and then played our Stoke Rochford course against that 'foreign' card taking the par and stroke index from that course. Once the initial shock was overcome, all enjoyed their round. However, half way round the heavens opened and all became very wet. Fortunately, a hot fish pie meal had been arranged and the usual banter accompanied the after dinner presentation which included prizes for a pre -dinner quiz.
As Dorne & Don Werner were unable to play on the day, the quiz and prize giving were ably managed by Norma Varley who delighted the players with her own style and delivery of the after dinner speech - many thanks Norma!! Thanks also to Steve Cullington who checked the accuracy of all final scores on the cards returned.
The prizes were won by:-
1st Mags & Jim Mcarthur 40 points - 21 on back 9
2nd Jackie Witten & Graham Manton 40 points - 20 on back 9
3rd Joan Lennard & Jeff Purdy 40 points - 19 on back 9
Nearest the pin for men (17th) Brian White
Nearest the pin for ladies (12th). As there wasn't a lady on the gree the prize was awarded to Janet Jessop for gainin the most points on the hole in question.
The quiz team prize was won after the tie-break question by Mags & Jim McArthur, Jackie Witten & Graham Manton
Let's hope that next year brings the same mixed team sucesses and enjoyment.
HOME MATCH v BELTON PARK, FRIDAY 26th AUGUST
A warm sunny day and the Werners were away enjoying their vacation in France ! However, the team performed admirably in their absence to record a handy 5.5 - 2.5 home win against near neighbours Belton Park.
Graham and June Miller had the misfortune to come up against Belton's organiser Colin and his wife, Lady Captain Sheila Mason and they unfortunately lost 6&4. By Graham's reckoning the opposition would have scored 50points in a betterball !!
Despite the first two games going down, the tail wagged very well with no further losses. Best result for Stoke was Avis & Bob Griffin with a 5&4 win.
This being the last game of the season, all Stoke players wanted to thank Dorne & Don for all their efforts this year in arranging and organising the matches and look forward to a repeat next year !!!!
Jeff Purdy & Roni Procter lost 2&1 to Paul Screen & Jenny Baxter
Graham & June Miller lost 6&4 to Colin & Sheila Mason
Steve & Cate Cullington won 2&1 against John & Carol Taylor
Bob & Avis Griffin won 5&4 against Ben Bayliss & Sue Walker-Sherriff
Greg & Lynn Ewart won 1 up against Lloyd Courtney & Annette Fordham
Philip & Norma Varley halved with Tom Parry & Anita Bartys
Jim & Mags McArthur won 3&1 against Graham Watkin & Anthea Nicoll
Graham Manton & Jacquie Witten won 3&2 against Rob & Olga Ebsworth
HOME MATCH V BURGHLEY PARK TUES 9th AUGUST 2016
The afternoon tee off weather deteriorated into showers, cloud and wind with low temperatures. Burghley Park fielded a strong team with their Club Captain Bob Emmins playing almost par golf going out in 40 - Norma & Phillip losing par to birdies on several holes ( a little demoralising!). The Hamiltons played well to hold their opposition to a loss of 2 down with youngster Scott Downie playing off 8. Janet & Alan Jessop recovered from a 5 down deficit to finish strongly. Our later teams played well to register wins. The meal was excellent with a fish pie main course and the usual team banter prevailed. Many thanks to Norma Varley who took over as Match Captain on the day and performed in her usual inimitable style!
Norma & Phillip Varley v Anne Fensom & Bob Emmins lost 6 & 5
Janet & Alan Jessop v Judy Cade & Bill O'Driscoll lost 2 down
Carol & David Hamilton v Steph Crook & Scott Downie lost 2 down
Joan Lennard & Charles Scott v Lynda Lancaster & Graham Bedford lost
Roni Proctor & Tim Haward v Gillian Bedford & Charles Cade won 3 & 1
Avis & Bob Griffin v Sheila Mayman & Richard Gilbert won 5 & 4
AWAY MATCH v BIRSTALL GC TUESDAY 2ND AUGUST 2016
Another great day's mixed golf played in the usual friendly fashion although Cate Cullington had the misfortune to be struck by a wayward golf ball resulting in a badly cut head. However, in the true spirit of team golf, Cate allowed her head to be bandaged and continued with dinner that afternoon! We were also suprised (again) by the opposition changing the format from betterball matchplay to betterball stableford with each pair totalling points at the end of the 'match', the winners being the pair with the highest stableford total. A great method for involving all players. The day was sunny, the meal excellent and we look forward to the return fixture next year.
Dorne & Don Werner v Rachel Baker & Mick Newton won 41 - 37
Roni Proctor & Tim Haward v Chris & Dick Smith won 33 - 28
Cate & Steve Cullington v Mair & Steve Mitchell - matche halved due to Cate's injury
Lynn & Greg Ewart v Chris & Gerry Hyde lost 38 - 44
Mags & Jim McArthur v Chris & Eric Muir won 41 - 37
Carol Hamilton & Ken Taylor v Joyce Calow & Simon Wells lost
Sue Taylor & David Hamilton v Jennie & David Michael won 40 - 33
AWAY WIN 4 1/2 - 2 1/2
AWAY MATCH V SCRAPTOFT G C SUNDAY 24th JULY 2016
Just a few hours prior to teeing off, the home team radically changed the format of this match. Instead of the normal betterball matchplay they preferred to play an AmAm stableford competition with 6 teams each consisting of 1 Stoke Rochford pair playing with 1 Scraptoft pair. Although viewed with some trepidation by the Stoke Team, a most enjoyable day was created to the extent where some future "matches" could take this form. The weather was kind, the course in good condition but the pin positions were set up for a previous Scraptoft competition and prove too demanding for all mixed team players - putting off the green became the norm!!!!
The results were as follows:-
1st place with 91 points Dorne & Don Werner(Stoke Rochford) with Jane & Tony Bews (Scraptoft)
2nd place with 85 points Bob & Avis Griffin (Stoke Rochford) with Pam & Jim Parker (Scraptoft)
AWAY MATCH v SEACROFT G C SUNDAY 10TH JULY 2016
On a warm but windy day, the Mixed Team visited one of the most popular courses on the match calendar. In the past, the event has always been a tremendously social occasion and this year proved to be no different especially for Norma & Philip Varley who were once again able to meet up with golfing friends of many years standing. The course provided the usual links challenges with the after match food making up for some disappointing scores! Many thanks must go to Carol & David Hamilton for travelling back from a big family party in Wales late on Saturday night.
Dorne & Don Werner v Eve & Geoff Smith lost 1 down
Cate & Steve Cullington v Jane & Gerry Canning lost 3 & 2
Jane Selby & Brian White v Jill & John Emerson won 2 up
Phillippa & Chris Smith v Suzi & Glyn Turner lost 5 & 4
Mags & Jim McArthur v Alison & Malcolm Johnson won 2 & 1
Norma & Philip Varley v Sue & Paul Enderby lost 4 & 3
Sue Taylor & David Hamilton v Pat Bee & Frank Smith lost 4 & 3
Carol Hamilton & Ken Taylor v Carolyn & Harry Wilkinson won 5 & 4
AWAY LOSS 5 - 3
AWAY MATCH v RADCLIFFE ON TRENT, SUNDAY 19th JUNE 2016
Always a favourite, the Radcliffe course was in excellent condition although the greens were a little slower than normal due to recent heavy rain. We remained dry for most of the round and, as usual, the Radcliffe Team provided excellent company. Jackie Witten partnered our Seniors Captain for her first experience of mixed team golf with us and Stoke Rochford Chairman Graham Miller was kind enough to deliver the traditional after dinner speech. Many thanks to the team for playing on Fathers Day.
June & Graham Miller v Jean Varney & Chris Tietjen won 3 & 2
Janet & Alan Jessop v Val & Ian Peat won 3 & 2
Dorne & Don Werner v Christine & Phillip Holmes won 4 & 3

Norma & Phillip Varley v Do & James Hofton won 2 & 1

The Stoke Rochford team included a new pair of Phillippa & Chris Smith while Richard Leverett supported our Lady Captain Roseanne McKee also on her first outing for the Mixed Team. There were three low single figure handicap men in the pairings resulting in some keen competition. The day was concluded with an excellent meal and the usual ribaldry amongst all players!

In the absence of Don Werner, the Club Chairman Graham Miller kindly deputised as Match Captain providing a winning result on the day. The course and weather provided near perfect playing conditions complimented by a good meal and the usual friendly atmosphere. Special thanks must go to Mike Dickinson who played as a last minute substitute after already playing 18 holes in the morning and, with his partner Roni Proctor, gaining the best win of the day.
