Captain’s Log *
Star Date * 29-August-2010
Much has happened since my last ‘log’
The A and B teams
narrowly lost out on winning their respective leagues – however this was still a commendable performance. My thanks to Paul and Ady for your contribution.
On a more positive note the Bramley Trophy team of Nick Watson, Greg Shelton and Craig Hallam qualified to play in finals day at Seacroft.
As you can imagine a summer’s day on the east coast the weather was blustery wind with several very heavy showers!!
In the semi finals Stoke Rochford beat Holme Hall – 2 games to 1 to reach the finals for the first time in the history of Stoke Rochford – the final was against Spalding who were also making their debut in the final.
Some excellent golf was played and all matches were very tight – with Nick Watson losing 1 down and Greg Shelton winning 2 up – so it was all down to the last game, which was all square playing the 18th.
Craig managed to find the green with his second shot from a very tricky lie and went on to halve the hole – so the extra holes had to be played.
On the 20th hole once again Craig played a stunning 2nd shot to within 5 feet of the hole and then rolled the putt in for a birdie so winning the match - what a result.
Well done to Paul Knapp and his other team for an entertaining, if somewhat tense day, and thank you to all of you who made the journey to Seacroft to support the team.
Congratulations also to the Ladies Handicap League Team who won their league and now play Elsham in the county final on 1st September at Market Rasen – good luck to you all. Supporters welcome.
The Gents 36 Hole Summer Open with once again some outstanding golf on show. Both the net and gross trophies were won by Ian Braime with a magnificent score of 65 + 64 gross -Total 129 and 66 + 65 Nett - Total 131.
A different world when you have to add shots to your gross to get your nett score is it not?
Well done Ian now off +2.
Congratulations also to Nick, who now is back to scratch following two good rounds.

What a month
- it has been since my last log –
Captain’s weekend
was extremely enjoyable – the summer ball was well attended and got the weekend off to a great start.
The food was excellent thanks to Mandy and Phil for this – as usual ‘The Hayleys’ provided a good selection of music that got us all up and dancing.
The golf on Saturday saw some very high scoring with Nev Marris and Steve Lemon
winning on count back over Pam and Nick Watson (44points)
Conditions on Sunday were very tricky for the medal with a blustery wind adding to the difficulty.
Once again scoring was good with Craig Hallam taking the gross prize (72) and Mick Rance taking the net prize and the Captain’s Cup with net (65) well done to all the prize winners.
On a personal note -
I would just like to thank everybody who donated raffle prizes and those who helped in the half- way house – your help and generosity was much appreciated.
As you will be aware The Kymin Howell Midland Youth Championship was held at SR from 7th to 9th July – as always the standard of golf was extremely high – this year we had 3 competitors Nick Watson, Chris Jones and Adam Footitt, unfortunately Chris and Adam did not make the cut.
Nick qualified in second place for the final two rounds with scores of 70 and 67 and he completed the competition with scores of 69 and 73 finishing in 6th place overall and 3rd in the Howell Cup – the Under 18 championship.
The league teams
continue with mixed fortunes with both the A and B team both teams having good wins at the weekend – they are both presently in contention for the league – good luck for the rest of your matches.
In the Bramley Trophy
competition, our team has qualified for the semi finals, which are due to be held at Seacroft on Saturday, 21st August - Well done to you.
Gents Summer Open and Collingwood Cup
– Please see notice board for entry details.

Captain
Welcome to the first of my Captain’s Log.
My objective is to keep you informed of happenings at the Club prior to publication, and to advise you of news items generally, including forthcoming fixtures / events.
Hopefully the winter is now over and we can all look forward to the golfing calendar with a little more enthusiasm.
Following the AGM in February, my appointment as Captain of Stoke Rochford Golf Club was confirmed. I am extremely proud and privileged to have been asked to be Captain and I would like to thank Steve Cullington our Immediate Past Captain, for his nomination. Steve is currently suffering from an injury, which is hampering his golf - I am sure we all wish him a speedy recovery.
The Captains Drive in was held on Sunday 7th March in the form of a Stableford AM-AM competition. The format was well received and was a successful day in terms of getting people involved in the proceedings, and the raising of funds for the Captains’ joint charity, the Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance. Many thanks for all the kind remarks and well wishes received by Janet and myself. The funds raised were in excess of £900. A meaningful sum, which will be much appreciated.
The worthy winners on a count back were possibly the bookies favourites, Bob and Avis Griffin, Antony Dawson and Eddie Oswin. I fancy this will not be the only prize I have the honour of presenting to them this year.
It is still early days, but both the Men’s and Ladies Mail on Sunday teams have been in action, both progressing to the next stage. Well done to you all.
Looking forward to April, please make a diary note of the Captains Presentation Evening, which is to be held on Friday 9th April in the Clubhouse at 7.30pm. At this event we will be paying tribute to Angus Dow who in January reached the milestone of 25 years as the Professional at Stoke Rochford Golf Club. There will be a presentation and a buffet has been organised to mark the event.
I look forward to seeing you then.
