Annodata Matchplay is the 5 man team, singles off handicap national club competition. Having had two successful home ties so far, a third round draw away to Woodhall Spa was always going to be a tough ask and on Friday the 13th !! The evening got off to a good start with Steve Cullington winning his game early, cancelled out with Steve Greenfield losing on the 16th. That left Stoke’s remaining 3 players all one down with two holes to play. Paul Knapp fell at the 17th to lose 2&1 and things didn’t look too good. In the most tense of finishes, somehow Stoke managed to pull off a victory few thought likely or possible. In the first part, first match out Andrew Watson came back from losing a ball on 16 and going one down to winning both the 17th and 18th holes to win 1up That great comeback set up the last game on the course with Adam Footitt also one down with 2 to play. He won the short par 4 seventeenth with a solid four with his opponent having been bunkered off the tee. On to 18 and everyone watching !! His tee shot on the last hit trees but found the fairway. Unfortunately his opponent didn’t have the same luck and he found bushes and incurred a penalty drop. The game ended with Adam securing a par 5 to win the hole with a very difficult 30 foot two putt from the back of the green with the whole match resting on it. This 3-2 win takes Stoke Rochford into the last 32 of the knockout competition and they eagerly await their next match.
